Natural cleaning products tips and recipes

Making your own home natural cleaning products at home can be easy. In order to make your own cleaning products, many of the ingredients may already be lurking within your kitchen cupboards. You’ve probably just never realised these quick, simple combinations could be used to clean your home. You could end up saving money and reduce your chemical exposure. Your home will even smell great too!

Here are some suggested recipes to try for your own DIY cleaning products…

Lemon and lavender multi-purpose cleaning spray


Juice of three lemons

3 tsp bicarbonate of soda

1 drop washing up liquid

3 drops lavender essential oil

Water to dilute


Mix the lemon juice with the bicarbonate of soda (you can usually find this in the baking aisle of your local supermarket). When the fizzing dies down, add the washing up liquid and lavender oil

Add water – around two parts water to one part of the lemon mixture

Stir well and decant into a clean spray bottle. Use as a multi-purpose surface cleaner

Tea tree oil and rosemary cleaning spray for tougher stains


Sprig of fresh rosemary

150ml white wine vinegar

3 tsp bicarbonate of soda

Drop of washing up liquid

3 drops tea tree oil


Boil rosemary and vinegar in a saucepan

Remove from heat and allow to cool

When cold, add bicarbonate of soda, washing up liquid and tea tree oil

Stir and decant into a spray bottle. Use as spray cleaner on tougher stains

Glass cleaner


60ml white vinegar

1 litre warm water


Mix vinegar and water in a spray bottle

Use to clean mirrors or glass with a piece of crumpled up newspaper

Polish with a clean dry cloth

Fridge deodoriser

Simply cut a lemon in half and leave in the fridge to absorb unpleasant odours.

Sink unblocker


500ml white wine vinegar

7 tbsp bicarbonate of soda


Mix bicarbonate of soda and vinegar and pour down sink immediately

Pour a kettle full of just-boiled water down the sink to flush clean

Copper and brass polish


Lemon juice



Mix lemon juice with the salt to form a paste

Rub into the metal to remove tarnish

Polish with a clean dry cloth

Toilet cleaner


Bicarbonate of soda

White vinegar


Sprinkle bicarbonate of soda around the inside of the toilet then add vinegar to the water

Use a toilet brush to scrub while the bicarbonate of soda and vinegar works on the stains and odours

Carpet cleaner


Bicarbonate of soda


Sprinkle the bicarbonate of soda generously over the carpet and leave it for as long as possible, overnight if you can

Vacuum the soda to find your carpets cleaner and better smelling

Leather cleaner


Banana skin


Wipe the inside of the banana skin on the spot of leather that needs to be cleaned

When you’ve finished rub with a damp cloth

Wood cleaner




Dip a dry cloth in the mayonnaise and rub into the marks on the wood

Leave for a few minutes before wiping away any residue

Olive oil furniture polish


Olive oil

Splash of lemon juice


Add lemon juice to olive oil and mix

Rub into hardwood furniture with a dry cloth
