As part of our partnership with the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) and the Benenden Tennis Festivals taking place across the UK, we caught up with professional tennis player Jamie Murray at the beginning of the 2016 grass court season to find out how parent power had a major influence on his career…

We recently researched how parents influence which sport their children play. The findings show parental attitudes influence children beyond whether they take part or not, with a particular impact on influencing which sporting teams their children support…

74% of parents inclined to encourage their child into same sports they played or are passionate about. Two-thirds of parents aged between 25 and 34 who influence their children to support same team they do – the most likely age bracket to do so. Newcastle has the most parents encouraging their children into supporting same team. Belfast is the most competitive parents in the UK. One in ten parents encouraging their children to win. 46& of men who revealed they influence their children into supporting the same team as them. One in four parents who have no influence on their child’s choice of team

With nearly 1 in 3 (30%) parents admitting they don’t encourage their child into sport at all, Benenden hope that this partnership with the LTA will help get more children and parents into the sporting environment together – with the Benenden Tennis Festivals aiming to encourage parents to get out and participate in sport alongside their children.
