Common symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Thoughts
  • "I can’t do this/that"
  • "I can’t do this/that"
  • "I need to know where the toilets are otherwise I cannot go out"
  • "I will embarrass myself"
  • "Something is seriously wrong with my stomach and bowels"
  • "I will soil myself"
Symptoms
  • Pain or discomfort in your stomach
  • You have stopped doing the things you enjoy
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea
  • You have been urgently needing the toilet more often than usual
  • You have constipation, diarrhoea, or bloating
Feelings
  • Low
  • Anxious
  • Irritable
  • Embarrassed
  • Tired

Possible causes of IBS

  • Overactive nerves and muscles in the gut and stomach
  • Intolerance to certain foods
  • Being unwell with an upset stomach (gastroenteritis or food poisoning)
  • Stressful life events – these can be unwelcome or traumatic, such as being bullied at work, getting divorced or being attacked/abused
  • Anxious personality type – you may have certain thinking styles which are part of your personality that can lead to you feeling anxious
  • Pressure – you may be under pressure at home or work, feel trapped or unable to problem solve certain issues
