Heart health: get the facts
Keep your heart healthy and it'll look after you! Here are five reasons why the heart is such a vital organ.
The heart is a powerful muscle, roughly the same size as a fist. It is made up of four chambers (the left and right atria at the top; the left and right ventricles below).
The heart is situated towards the middle of the chest, protected by the ribcage. It is tilted slightly to the left.
It beats an amazing 100,000 times a day, every day.
It pumps five litres of blood through the body. This is no mean feat considering that our veins and arteries amount to a cardiovascular system stretching 60,000 miles.
… and the why
Its job is to bring oxygen and nutrients to every tissue in the body via the bloodstream, while removing carbon dioxide and other waste products at the same time.
