Simple daily exercises to help keep your heart in shape

We are often encouraged to do more exercise – whetherBoken Hearted it’s to lose weight, boost our mental state or for a healthy heart. While it is easy to ignore these reminders, starting to do a bit more physical exercise can really pay off later in life.

If you don’t do any exercise at all, then you may be more at risk of having a heart attack. By working out for just a few minutes a day, you could lower the chances of developing coronary heart disease. Here are five incredibly simple exercises that will help you keep your heart in shape.

Take the stairs

Do you head straight for the lift or escalator when entering a building? Instead of taking the easy option, go for the stairs! Walking up stairs will give you a few added minutes of exercise each day without you even noticing it.

Studies have found that walking up stairs can reduce the risk of dying prematurely, by any cause, by 15%, so it’s definitely worth the extra few minutes travel time.

Carry your shopping

While a session on the weights at the gym would be preferable, few people actually have the time to get fit in this way. One easy alternative is to carry heavy shopping.

Instead of spending 10 minutes looking for the perfect parking space, park as far away as possible. This will mean you have to carry your shopping further, strengthening your muscles in the process.

Hop on a stationary bike

After a long day at work, millions of people spend their evenings relaxing in front of the television. There is nothing wrong with that, but it is possible to use that time a little more wisely.

Invest in a stationary bike and spend two hours pedalling away to give yourself a decent workout without missing your favourite programmes.

Sort the garden

Exercise doesn’t have to take the form of running, cycling, or swimming; just being more active in and around the house can be beneficial.

If your garden needs clearing, spend a few hours on your hands and knees weeding and planting to work up a sweat.

Dance the night away

Are you and your friends planning a night out on the town? Great! You’ll be spending the evening on your feet and throwing shapes on the dance floor. Any sort of activity that increases your heart rate is beneficial, so dust off those dancing shoes and hit the dance floor!

How much exercise should I do?

It’s recommended that adults do two and a half hours of moderate exercise each week. That’s just 30 minutes a day, five days a week, so it can be easily slotted into your daily routine.
