Charity bike ride to raise mental health awareness
Benenden Charitable Trust and SAMH (Scottish Association for Mental Health) are teaming up to organise Cycle GB 2016, a 600-mile charity bike ride from SAMH’s home in Glasgow to Benenden Hospital in Kent.
The event in September seeks to increase awareness of mental health and raise £50,000, which will be divided equally between the two charities to support their work. All costs of the event are being covered by Benenden and partner organisations, which means that all money raised from sponsorship will go directly to the charities.
A team of 22 intrepid cyclists from Benenden, Keegan & Pennykid and RSA will take on the significant physical challenge of the ride across two 300-mile stages: stage 1 from Glasgow to Benenden’s registered office in York, and stage 2 from York to Kent.
Members can watch some of the cyclists talk about their motivation for taking on the challenge and how they are preparing for it at www.benenden.co.uk/cyclegb2016.
The event has attracted support from Virgin Trains East Coast and Marriott Hotels as travel and accommodation partners. Both organisations are getting involved with fundraising activities along the route, as well as providing social media and PR support.
Benenden Charitable Trust manager Thom Craigen said: “We have some corporate sponsors who are helping kick-start the process, but we will be almost entirely reliant on the support of individual Benenden members to help us achieve our fundraising target. I hope that people reading this will be inspired to sponsor our riders – even just a few pounds – and maybe leave them a supportive message to help them through the challenge.”
