Fitness tips from the world of sport
In the revamped Benenden members’ magazine coming your way later this month, Judy Murray shares her health and fitness tips from the world of tennis. We also spoke to professional snowboarder Jamie Nicholls, who reveals his best advice.
Jamie Nicholls has competed in some of the world’s biggest snowboarding events, including X-Games, Tokyo Burton Rail Days and the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics, where he came sixth.
He began snowboarding at the age of seven on the dry slope at the Halifax Ski and Snowboard Centre, turned professional at 15 and was selected to represent Team GB a year later.
“I used to live right next to the dry slope at Halifax and I’d spend as much of my time there as I possibly could,” says the 22-year-old. “When I started the sport, it was just a hobby that I did with my family. As I got more involved in it, I started snowboarding every day. I loved it. I never thought it would lead me to where I am today.”
Jamie’s fitness tips
Vary your routine to keep it interesting. “I do a lot of climbing and gymnastics to complement my snowboarding training routine. As well as keeping my schedule and routine interesting, these activities help me to build on my strength and work on my cardio.”
Exercise is all about having fun. “If you take up snowboarding, at first it can take a while to become accustomed to your board and adjust your balance. Don’t get disheartened or frustrated, you will get the hang of it. Always remember to keep calm and just enjoy what you’re doing.”
Rest is key. “In my sport, my body undergoes huge stress and strain on the slopes – especially during jumps and tricks. It’s important to set aside time to let your body recover. Having recently undergone knee surgery, rest time was crucial to help me regain my full strength and was an integral part of my training regime.”
