What is No Smoking Day?
What is ‘No Smoking Day’?
Smoking is responsible for one in every five deaths in adults aged over 35 in England. With this in mind, quitting is probably the single most beneficial step you can take to improve your health.
This year, the theme is ’V for Victory’ – a reminder of all the people NSD has helped quit for good.
If you’re looking to kick the habit, you aren’t alone; every year, over a million people use No Smoking Day to help them on their journey to becoming smoke-free. So why not join over a million smokers in their bid to quit?
You’ll soon see the benefits: clearer skin, whiter teeth and most importantly - reduced risk of health problems. After one year, your risk of heart attack and heart disease will have fallen to about half that of a smoker. Surely that alone is reason enough to quit…
Make the pledge
This year, we’re asking you your reasons for quitting. Do you want more energy? A heightened sense of taste and smell? Maybe you don’t want your loved-ones to breathe in your second-hand smoke?
Whatever your inspiration, let us know…
All you have to do to make your pledge is to make a six second Vine video, explaining your reason for quitting. Then tweet your Vine video with the handle @benendenhealthUK and the hashtag #VforVine
Do it today, and help inspire fellow quitters in their attempt to go smoke-free.
Top tips to curb cravings
- Nicotine replacement: using nicotine replacement solutions such as patches, gum, spray and tablets can be a helpful way to keep cravings at bay.
- Knowing your addiction: knowing the times that you’re most susceptible to craving a cigarette can be a huge help when it comes to quitting. Often one habit comes with another – so simply exchanging your post-dinner cigarette with a hot drink for example, can help you to break the association with smoking after a meal.
- Get 24/7 help: having something to refer to, night or day, for tips and support, can be a great help. Check out the NHS 30 day quit smoking app for on-the-go guidance.
