Benenden boosts preparation for Cystic Fibrosis testing in children

26th July 2017

Thanks to a community grants initiative offered by health and wellbeing provider, Benenden the ‘What? Why? Children in Hospital’ charity has been able to develop and release a video on sweat testing for cystic fibrosis.

People with cystic fibrosis experience a build-up of thick sticky mucus in the lungs, digestive system and other organs, causing a wide range of challenging symptoms affecting the entire body.

The What? Why? Children in Hospital (WWCIH) charity based in Edinburgh makes videos to help families prepare for hospital. They published their first video in September 2015 and now have more than 30 videos about hospital procedures.

Claire Hetherington, CSR and Engagement Co-ordinator at Benenden said: “We are so pleased to support this charity in their development of this important video. Keeping patients and families informed on all aspects of their health is important to Benenden, and so working with WWCIH resonates well with our values around health and wellbeing.

Sarah, a parent of a child with cystic fibrosis in Edinburgh said: “I feel it is brilliant that parents can see the procedure beforehand, I like to know what is going to happen to my child.”

Dr Marit Boot, Founder of WWCIH said: ”Parents with an ill child can get very worried whilst children can get anxious about hospital tests, so having the videos to watch in advance helps to prepare both the parent and child. Showing them what is going to happen can help to reduce anxiety.”

“We had a number of requests from families to create a video about the sweat test used to diagnose or rule out cystic fibrosis (CF), so we applied to Benenden’s community grants initiative to fund the video. We are very grateful to both Benenden and Braemore for their support, which has enabled us to produce this new video.”

“The respiratory department in the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh was very supportive of this project and asked us to make the video with their team. Thousands of sweat tests are done each year in the UK, so this project will hopefully offer support to many families around the whole of the UK.”

The donation is part of Benenden’s programme to actively seek out small-scale community projects or activities to provide support through one-off donations or grants. Helping children and parents be better informed about testing procedures seemed like an ideal project for us to help.”
