Benenden Hospital welcomes Department of Health visitors
21st August 2015
Two representatives from the Department of Health paid a visit to Benenden Hospital to see how the organisation achieves excellence when it comes to patient care.
The visitors were Jane Barrett and Hillary Layard-Liesching, who both work in the Patient and Public Involvement team in the Department. It came about after they read a magazine article about Benenden Hospital’s impressive patient satisfaction levels.
Eager to learn more they set up a meeting with the hospital’s Director of Patient Services Claire Harley. They also met the hospital’s Patient Experience Lead Jo Lyddon and other members of staff.
Recent patient experience results show that of those responding 100% of inpatients said they would recommend Benenden Hospital to others and 100% of patients said that felt they were involved in key treatment decisions. 99% of our outpatients said they were treated with dignity and respect.
Claire Harley said: “We are extremely proud of our work in patient experience and the commitment from our staff towards maintaining standards whilst always striving to be the best we can be.”
During the visit Jane and Hilary also had a tour of the hospital, met the Hospital Director Jane Abbott, the hospital’s Medical Director John Giles, Matrons Wendy Hall and Ali Curtis and learnt more about a staff health and wellbeing group and about the hospital’s Investors in People award and efforts.
Claire said: “The feedback that we had on the day was that our colleagues from the Department of Health thought we were innovative and ahead of the curve.
“We are thrilled that our colleagues in the Department of Health chose to visit Benenden Hospital and pleased to know that our culture, in line with our 108 year heritage, continues to place patients at the heart of everything we do.”
The Department of Health visitors work in a team which strives to make sure patient views and patient experience are taken into account when decisions are made and policies set. Hillary said: “A lot of our work focuses on understanding how patients interact with NHS services and their feedback on their experiences. We work closely with NHS England and the Care Quality Commission and we engage with Patient and Public Involvement practitioners outside the department to get an understanding of what is going on in health services. There is so much brilliant work going on!”
