Congratulations to Mid-Counties Co-operative on winning Co-operative of the Year
1st November 2012
Earlier this year, Benenden Healthcare Society was short-
listed as Co-operative of the Year in the prestigious UK-wide Co-operative Awards 2012.
At the awards last night (31 Oct), unfortunately we were not winners – but we like to pass on well-deserved congratulations to the winner:Mid-Counties Co-operative.
Like Benenden Healthcare, they have consistently showcased mutuals and co-operatives as being a viable and important economic alternative.
The Mid-Counties Co-operative was described by the national body Co-operatives UK as “demonstrating excellence in the areas of business and commercial performance with operating profits in the co-operative’s last financial year increasing from £18.1 million to £20.9 million, a commitment to employee engagement as well as sustained benefits to members, society and the environment.”
The Renewable Energy Co-operative completed the short-list of three – so Benenden Healthcare can take heart from having been a finalist alongside just two others from the thousands of mutuals and co-operatives across the country.
Marc Bell, Marketing & Business Strategy Director at Benenden Healthcare said: “Co-ops and mutuals play a significant part in keeping the UK economy moving and this short-listing is a terrific achievement in what has been a momentous year for Benenden Healthcare."
Ed Mayo, Secretary General of Co-operatives UK, said: “The Co-operative Awards 2012 are a chance to celebrate co-operatives businesses during the UN International Year of Co-operatives, with co-operative leaders from around the world.
“Co-operatives UK is proud to have members in all sectors of the economy which are proving their sustainability, innovation and resilience every day in a tough economic climate.”
Mid-Counties Co-operative were announced as winners on 31 October at the International Dinner of Co-operatives United - the culminating event of the International Year of Co-operatives - which is taking place in Manchester this week.
