Benenden health comes on board as York Pride main sponsor
18th October 2013
Benenden health, the mutual not-for-profit healthcare provider with headquarters in York, has announced a major new partnership with York Pride, the organisation leading the campaign for equality for LGBT people in York and North Yorkshire.
From its beginnings in the early 1900s as self-help organisation to give less well-off post office workers access to healthcare for TB, benenden health has maintained a strong ethos of fairness and equality. Building on their links to the community of York via their sponsorship of and work with York City FC, benenden health is now to be the main sponsor of York Pride 2014.
After being impressed by the York Pride campaigns about the murder of gay activist David Kato and on homophobia in sport – backed by York City and York Knights – benenden health are to work with York Pride in 2014 to support the right to be open about your sexuality throughout your life - from school into the workplace and onto later life. With benenden health's support, York Pride will promote this message to schools, employers and housing providers across York and North Yorkshire – beginning with a high profile launch in York later in 2013.
Lawrence Christensen, Marketing Director at benenden health said, “Coming on-board once again as main sponsor of York Pride makes real sense for Benenden Health. Our focus as a mutual organisation is very much on the importance of community and York Pride’s aim to promote diversity and equality is one which is integral to our organisation.
"We treat all of our members equally - accepting anyone, regardless of age or existing medical conditions and we charge no excess – so our community has at its heart fairness and inclusiveness, key motivators behind York Pride. The plans for next year look fantastic and we are looking forward to being involved with such a high profile event in the local York community.”
Greg Stephenson, Chair of York Pride, added “A close partnership with benenden health made perfect sense for York Pride. Both of our organisations come from the community to support the community and to change lives for the better. We are delighted to be working alongside such an important York employer and this will strengthen our voice for positive change in our part of the world”.
The York Pride 2014 event, including the Pride Parade through the city centre, will take place on Saturday 21st June at the Knavesmire, with a full afternoon of entertainment, stalls and activities. In the first six months of 2014, York Pride - with the support of benenden health - will be announcing a number of exciting activities and initiatives to support equality for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.
