Benenden health welcome Chernobyl children to York with visit to York City Football Club
9th July 2013
Children from the Chernobyl region will be visiting York City Football Club this week (10th July 2013) for a special party arranged by York-based mutual healthcare provider benenden health.
The group of thirteen children accompanied by two interpreters, have been visiting Easingwold as part of a month long stay in the UK organised by the Easingwold Friends of Chernobyl’s Children group.
Each year the group organise a recuperative visit for the children, who live in Belarus - an area affected by the explosion of the nuclear plant in Chernobyl in 1986. The trip aims to improve their health and offers the children a variety of activities throughout their month-long visit in the local area.
Local business and main sponsors of York City Football Club, benenden health, have arranged for the children to make a special visit to the Club during their stay. The party of children will enjoy a tour of the football ground, followed by fun football activities with York City in the Community coaches as well as being given a goody bag to take away.
Paul Keenan, Head of Communications at benenden health said: "We are delighted to welcome these children, who have been through so much, to York. The Easingwold Friends of Chernobyl Children’s group do an incredible job to ensure the children get a break and we very much wanted to get involved to help make sure the children had a memorable time here in York.
“We particularly wanted to offer a fun and engaging activity for them to take part in and a visit to York City Football Club seemed perfect. We hope the children enjoy their stay in the local area and that they will have some very special memories to take home with them.”
Louise Hudson,Co-ordinator at the Easingwold Friends of Chernobyl’s Children group said: “The children are so excited about the visit! The little boy who stays with me has become mad about football since he started visiting England and I know, seeing a real stadium will be one of the best things he's ever done. We simply cannot thank benenden health enough for their generosity and thoughtfulness.”
