Competition winners get behind the scenes look at York City FC thanks to Benenden
1st June 2016
This month sees the start of a series of VIP tours of York City FC’s Bootham Crescent ground for competition winners from across Yorkshire.
The tours were organised by community sponsor Benenden as part of a competition with York City FC Foundation for Yorkshire-wide charities and groups. Entrants were asked to say why a visit to Bootham Crescent would be special for them – with the prize being a special behind the scenes tour and football activity at York City.
Four winners were chosen: Applefields School football group, York Wheels, Thorpe United FC Under 11s and Tockwith Football Club Under 11s girls team.
Kicking off the tours was a group of children from Applefields, which is a special school in York for 11- 19 year olds with a wide range of learning disabilities. The school started a football club with a York City Foundation coach last year and following the success of the club, they have this year entered a team in to the North Riding County FA Football league hosted by YCFC Foundation.
Caroline England, Teaching Assistant at Applefields School said: “Through the help of York City FC Foundation, all our students have now been given a chance to play football outside of school, which for most of them they wouldn't have had otherwise.
“Winning this competition will allow the children to see the bigger picture of a football club and give them an insight into something to aspire to. We hope this will encourage them to carry on playing in the league with Applefields when they leave school at 19.”
Claire Hetherington, Communications Co-ordinator at Benenden said: “We set up these tours in order to give something back to the community. We strongly support York City Foundation’s encouragement of local people getting involved with football in their local area. We had so many fantastic entries it was difficult to select the winners but we hope the winning groups have enjoyed the tours and we look forward to continuing our work with the Foundation.”
Paula Stainton, Foundation Manager of York City FC Foundation said, “We are delighted to welcome the competition winners to the Bootham Crescent for this special visit. We saw this as a real chance for local groups to get involved in their local Club, and to reward both the participants and the volunteers to give them a thank you for all their support of the both the Football Club and their own groups.”
Other winners include:
- York Wheels, a local charity who currently have 30 drivers who provide door-to-door transport for older people and people with disabilities. They use their own cars and take people shopping, to the hospital or doctors, to see friends or go on holiday. Last year they provided over 20,000 journeys and entered the competition as a wonderful way of saying ‘thank you’ to all the volunteer drivers.
- Thorpe United FC U 11s team wanted both the players and the managers to have the opportunity to enjoy the tour as the players work very hard in training, are doing very well in their league, whilst the managers dedicate so much time and energy into the team.
- Tockwith under 11s girls team were entered by one of their players who is hoping that the trip to the stadium will inspire some of her teammates to consider a career in football, and hopes it will encourage them to join her at the York City Foundation holiday camps to further improve their talents
