Healthy team up gives York City confident start to the season
27th July 2012
York City Football Club are making full use of shirt sponsor Benenden Healthcare’s health expertise as a team of nurses carry out pre-season health checks on the first team squad.
Benenden Healthcare Society have invited a team of practitioners from their subsidiary independent hospital - Benenden Hospital in Kent - to carry out full health checks, including ECG tests, on 23 first team squad members on Thursday 26th July.
Benenden Healthcare Society, a York-based organisation and one of the UK’s leading health & wellbeing mutual organisations, came on board as shirt sponsor of York City in June – signalling their intention to help the club support heart health in footballers following the high profile collapse of Bolton player Fabrice Muamba during a top-flight match earlier in 2012.
Jeff Miller, Physiotherapist at York City Football Club said: “The importance of these sorts of health checks for our players cannot be stressed enough. Statistics show that at least 12 ordinary and apparently healthy young people a week die of undiagnosed cardiac related abnormalities. For our players, who are are athletes performing at the highest levels, it is essential that we know they are safe and not putting themselves at any sort of risk.”
Dee Farris, Modern Matron at Benenden Hospital said: “Athletes such as footballers put immense strain on their bodies on a regular basis and so it’s hugely important that they undergo regular health checks to ensure any potential issues are caught early. The Fabrice Muamba incident earlier this year has highlighted just how vital this is.
“As sponsors of York City Football Club, Benenden Healthcare is keen to support the club in every way that it can and so we were delighted to travel from Kent to provide our expertise.
“The health of the players is a top priority and by carrying out these checks we can help to ensure that there are no issues with the players’ fitness pre-season. This added dimension to the sponsorship promotes the goal of building a mutually beneficial relationship with the club going forward.”
