Kick off for York City and benenden charity matches
11th February 2015
York City Football Club Foundation and its community sponsors benenden have put together a charity team squad for a series of fundraising fixtures. The team will play against other local teams - with the first match set to take place on Sunday 8th March at Stamford Bridge in York.
The York City/benenden charity squad will be made up of former York players – including legends Richard Cresswell, Jonathon Greening and Andy McMillan - alongside York City and benenden employees.
The first match will be played against Stamford Bridge Over 35s – and local York residents have the chance to attend and cheer the teams on. The cost to attend is £2 per adult and free for under 12s, to be paid upon entry to the match, which kicks off at 3pm.
The matches will be played in aid of benenden’s charities of the year Macmillan & St Leonard’s Hospice, York City Foundation’s charity Arclight and the Stamford Bridge team's chosen charity Candlelighters Trust.
Paula Stainton, Foundation Manager of York City FC Foundation said, “We’ve had great success in the past with charity matches and we saw this as a real chance for local teams to get involved. We’re really hoping the local community comes out to support the two teams and help us raise lots of money for charities!”
Nicola Taylor, Communications Coordinator at benenden said, “We were keen to set up the charity squad as it’s a fantastic opportunity to help raise money for a variety of worthy causes whilst having some fun. Our staff are really looking forward to taking part and playing alongside ex-professional players. We’d encourage people to come along on the day and support the initiative.”
Stamford Bridge Over 35's Manager, Andy Pope said "Stamford Bridge AFC are thrilled York City are coming to play the Over 35's to raise funds for Candlelighters, a charity very close to our Junior Football Section"
The charity squad are also looking for any teams interested in playing future charity matches against them to get in touch - just email email@example.com to register your interest – outlining details of your team, your venue and dates available to play.
