Gruelling 600 mile cycle challenge kicks off from Glasgow’s Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome
21st September 2016
A team of cyclists will be setting off from the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow today (21st September) for a gruelling 600 mile cycle challenge to raise £50,000 for SAMH (Scottish Association for Mental Health) and Benenden Charitable Trust.
The challenge, ‘Cycle GB 2016’, will see riders going all the way from Glasgow, home to many of SAMH’s vital services, to Benenden Hospital in Kent to raise money for the two charities.
Thom Craigen, Charitable Trust Manager at Benenden who organised the event said: “We’re all incredibly excited about getting started with the challenge which is going to be a really tough experience for the riders – particularly those amongst the group who started out as beginners.
“The money we’ve raised will be helping to support two fantastic causes and the team have been putting hours into training to help prepare for the event. A huge thank you goes to everyone who has supported us so far.”
Billy Watson, Chief Executive at SAMH said: “I would like to thank everyone that has volunteered their time to get on their bike and raise money for SAMH and Benenden Charitable Trust.
“It won’t be an easy challenge by any means, but the riders are driven by the difference the money raised will make to the lives of people that use our much needed services.”
In support of the event, staff at Marriott Hotels across the country will be matching the efforts of the riders on individual days, riding ‘MILE for MILE’ with the cyclists in their own fundraising events. The team from Glasgow Marriott will be pedalling the 93 mile first leg of the challenge between Glasgow and Longtown on 21st September.
All money raised from the events will be split equally between the two charities. Benenden Charitable Trust helps those experiencing financial difficulties or distress because of sickness, infirmity, disability or any medical conditions. SAMH is Scotland’s largest mental health charity, providing services to people affected by mental health issues in more than 60 communities and campaigning on mental health.
Major events sponsors are also on board to support the event – including property and construction company Wilmott Dixon, injury rehabilitation specialists Rehabworks and insurance brokers Keegan & Pennykid.
Other sponsors include membership publishing agency Think, printing company Spellman Walker, Hatmill Supply Chain Consultancy and creative marketing agency Space Creative. With support also being offered from a range of business’s including sports nutrition company Chia Charge, cycling experts Skinny Tyres and Mandrill Media who will be filming the event.
