Benenden talks to Think Tank Policy Review about EU priorities
19th November 2014
After the May 2014 European elections and the subsequent confirmation of the new European Commission at the end of October, benenden health has expressed its views on the new priorities for the EU.
In a piece written exclusively for the think tank, Policy Review, benenden health warns that a Trade Agreement with the United States could have lasting consequences on the delivery of NHS services in the UK. The piece also calls on EU institutions to focus on protecting mutuals and the health sector from health budget cuts, thus increasing the sustainability of the health system.
Taking stock of the newly composed European Parliament and Commission, which has now started work since the beginning of November, Benenden’s Chief Executive Marc Bell expresses the long-standing mutual’s wishes and concerns, declaring: “EU trade policy will affect the health landscape and the way patients access healthcare and get healthcare coverage all over Europe”.
Benenden therefore calls on the Commission to weigh all consequences and knock-on effects of the trade agreement that the EU is negotiating with the United States.
Marc Bell also uses the piece to draw the public’s attention to the influence the EU has had on national budgets recently and warns that cuts to the health budgets should not be put forward at EU level either. The Solidarity-based systems that include mutuals need support from the European Union - therefore Benenden would support a stronger focus on the sustainability of health systems in the EU as well as of ways to promote mutuals at EU level such as the proposal for a ‘European Mutual Statute’.
