Chief Executive of benenden health responds to the ‘NHS Five Year Forward View’
28th October 2014
Benenden health’s Marc Bell has commented on the NHS Five Year Forward View, launched by NHS Chief Executive Simon Stevens on Thursday 23rd October.
“This new NHS ‘plan’ is a bold move by NHS England Chief Executive, Simon Stevens and one will make the road to next May’s election increasingly interesting.
“It has been pitched as the NHS’s own plan and one that is non-politicised. Benenden health welcomes this as we are already in the mode of working with all political parties for the greater benefit of UK healthcare.
“The common sense tone of the Forward View is to be encouraged, particularly in helping political parties to firmly wake up on the issue of NHS funding. All the challenges the NHS faces mean that those involved in healthcare need to roll up our sleeves and try to make a difference.
“At benenden health, we are focused on trying to align what we do with the challenges that the NHS faces because we see that as an opportunity for the system to take cost out of the delivery, to innovate and use new means for caring for the population where it is particularly stretched.
“As part of the discussion on the UK’s healthcare system, I would urge decision-makers to investigate how organisations that are not in it for profit can take some of the strain within the NHS funding structure, using their expertise to help keep people out of the expensive hospital setting. We believe fundamentally that healthcare should be free at the point of care, at the point of need but we do think there’s room in that system for not-for-profit and friendly societies to play a bigger role.”
