Empowering patients a hot topic for benenden health at party conferences
22nd September 2014
As the politicians and policymakers head to the industrial cities of Manchester, Birmingham and Glasgow* this year for the party conference season – benenden health will be playing host to senior figures from the Labour and Conservative parties at their events, looking at patient empowerment in the NHS.
Benenden health will be hosting an event at each conference with the thinktank Respublica.
- Rt Hon Andy Burnham MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Health will be part of the panel at the Labour event in Manchester.
- Dr Dan Poulter MP, Minister for Health, will attend a private roundtable at the Conservative conference in Birmingham.
Marc Bell, Chief Executive of benenden health said:
“This year’s party conferences are especially important as they are the last before the General Election in 2015. Benenden health is delighted to be involved in thought provoking conversations with senior politicians to ensure that the voice of our members and mutuals in general are heard.
“Patient empowerment is key if the NHS is to survive the many challenges it faces. Being more engaged in one’s own wellbeing and remaining healthy as long as possible and then taking ownership of one’s own care once ill health occurs – is really important not only for the individual and their families but the whole of society. Benenden health has a role to play in supporting the NHS and ensuring this happens. We will be talking to politicians and other delegates about how we can.”
*The Liberal Democrats are in Glasgow for their conference. Benenden health hosted an event in York when the Lib Dems held their spring conference in the city. Norman Lamb MP, Minster for Social Care attended.
