Benenden health was founded in 1905 to provide treatment for people suffering from Tuberculosis (TB), a disease which was rife at the time.
Fast forward one hundred years later and whilst the organisation now provides access to a range of discretionary healthcare services, benenden health continues to remain interested in stories that involve TB.
Public Health England have today published their UK-wide statistics on TB levels which show that whilst rates of the disease have stabilised over the past seven years, the levels of TB in the UK remains high compared to most other Western European countries.
Public Health England state that 8,751 cases were reported in 2012 which gives an incidence rate of 13.9 per 100,000 population. Despite efforts to prevent TB and provide treatment we are still seeing London accounting for the highest proportion of cases in the UK (39%) followed by the West Midlands PHE Centre area (12%).
