Mutuals call for stronger measures to improve access to healthcare following European elections
8th July 2014
The umbrella organisation for health mutuals and health insurance funds (AIM), has published a Memorandum on the recent EU elections. The Memorandum calls for stakeholders to promote solidarity-based health coverage through mutuals. Health mutuals are also drawing attention to major public health issues including the need to increase prevention measures across the EU.
As a leading mutual healthcare provider and member of AIM, Benenden Health supports the key priorities of prevention, access to healthcare for all and sustainable health systems that should be at the heart of EU-led action in the field of healthcare. Mutuals also highlight that realising these objectives will go through protecting these organisations from the possible effects of the trade agreement with the United States currently being negotiated at EU level.
Lawrence Christensen, Group Marketing Director at Benenden Health, said: ‘As active members of AIM, we call upon European politicians to improve their citizens’ health by recognising the role of solidarity-based health coverage via mutuals. We see mutual providers such as Benenden Health as the ideal solution at EU level, to ensure equal access to healthcare for all and to boost the sustainability of health systems, through a push for more cost-effectiveness and integrated care.’
At a national level, Benenden Health is the perfect illustration of how mutuals can help relieve pressure on the NHS. This is outlined in the recent report by independent think tank ResPublica showing how mutuals can help to deliver better outcomes for patients and the NHS.
