Affordable healthcare provider Benenden Health has partnered with skin cancer detection service SkinVision. Its services are immediately available for Benenden Health’s 870,000+ membership, with new members able to access from day one of their membership.
The partnership comes after Benenden Health research found that just under a fifth (18%) of respondents regularly check or assess their moles, and only 14% of respondents apply sunscreen during the winter months.
Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the UK, with over 250,000 new cases annually. Approximately 16,200 to 17,600 new cases of melanoma are diagnosed each year, and around 90% of all skin cancers are caused by overexposure to UV radiation from the sun or sunbeds.
SkinVision is an innovative mobile application designed to help people detect skin cancer early. By combining a clinically validated artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm with the expertise of leading dermatologists, the app analyses photos of moles and skin spots to assess the risk of skin cancer with high accuracy.
The regulated class II medical device can detect signs of most common skin cancers with over 90% sensitivity. The digital skin checker's core mission is to reduce skin cancer-related deaths by 50% by 2035, saving 250,000 lives. So far it has detected over 50,000 skin cancers and has helped users perform over six million skin checks to date.
In 2024 alone it supported 1,037 clinically validated skin cancer cases in the UK; 48 of those Melanoma (5%); 183 of those Squamous Cell Carcinoma (18%); 806 of those Basal Cell Carcinoma (78%).
The digital skin checker's services will join Benenden Health's already substantial offering, including 24/7 GP Helpline, 24/7 Mental Health Helpline, Care Planning and Social Care Advice and access to hundreds of preventative health advice on its app.
Speaking of its value to members, Benenden Health's Head of Innovation, David Winter shares, "Early signs of skin cancer can be hard to spot, leaving people uncertain and worried. With diagnoses on the rise, this early detection service for our members couldn’t come at a better time.
"At Benenden Health, we’re dedicated to shaping a future where innovation and healthcare go hand in hand to benefit even more members. By incorporating digital solutions like SkinVision, we're making it easier for our members to access convenient, rapid intervention, empowering them to take charge of their health with confidence. Should members detect any concerns, through our Diagnostics offering, we can ensure that members receive prompt onward support whenever it's needed."
SkinVision's CEO, Erik de Heus, adds, “We are very excited to partner with Benenden Health to support their members to take control of their skin health.
“With the app, they can routinely check their skin and get a qualified risk assessment they can share with their doctor. This means faster action when needed, and less waiting when it's not.”
