What your employees' membership excludes

The NHS provides speedy care for a number of conditions, which are among those we don't provide treatment for. Instead we aim to use our members’ contributions to pay for healthcare that complements the NHS, making our healthcare a much more affordable alternative.

  • Emergency care
  • Surgery for arterial, cardiac, neurological or complex orthopaedic problems or Bariatric surgery. However, The Benenden Hospital Trust offers a preferential rate to members who opt to have their hip or knee replacement surgery on a self-pay basis at Benenden Hospital in Kent. This discount is not available at other Benenden Approved Hospitals
  • Cosmetic, breast, plastic, sterilisation, nerve, dental or maxillofacial surgery, or surgery for transplants
  • Appointments with specialists such as radiologists, dentists, opticians or complementary therapists and pain management specialists
  • Heart surgery
  • Cancer treatment
  • Retrospective services, where our written authorisation hasn’t been sought
  • Consultations, tests and treatments outside the UK
  • Services which are delivered by a non-UK, non-VAT registered organisation
  • We are unable to support ongoing monitoring, follow-up consultations or treatment for the same medical condition. You should seek support through the NHS
  • Minor outpatient treatments (MOTs), such as wart or cyst removals, unless Benenden have provided the diagnosis and expressly agreed to fund the treatment

How can we offer affordable healthcare?

We’re able to offer high-quality private healthcare for just one low cost per employee because:

  • Because we are a not-for-profit organisation with the primary focus of providing our members with the services they require and not worrying about profits to give to shareholders
  • Because we have over 800,000 members it allows us to negotiate excellent pricing with private medical providers
  • Because we believe in affordable, accessible private healthcare for those times when you need extra support
  • Because we don’t compete with the NHS and don’t offer treatment for health issues the NHS supports really well, such as cancer care or heart problems, although we do help to diagnose these conditions if they are initially suspected
Our network of hospitals

We have a national network of 27 hospital facilities dedicated to providing prompt treatment. Our network also provides access to an additional five hospitals for paediatric services. More information available upon request. Your employees will also have access to over 500 diagnostic facilities nationwide.

Our treatment and surgery network includes our own Benenden Hospital located in Kent. In 2017, Benenden Hospital received the highest rating of ‘Outstanding’ from the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Employees living within our calculation of a 2 hour drive time of Benenden Hospital will undergo their treatment at Benenden Hospital (subject to the availability of the required specialty). Travel advice can be provided to employees who are required to travel to Benenden Hospital. All other employees outside of this catchment area can choose to use Benenden Hospital should they wish to do so.

We introduced Benenden as part of our Health @ Work Action Plan; it complements the work contained within our Action Plan and School Development Plan and provides a service that would otherwise not have been available to staff

Fidelma Hegarty, HR & Finance Manager, St. Columb’s College

Staff health issues can now usually be resolved quickly, resulting in less sick leave. Not having to wait on a long NHS list to speak to a professional keeps anxiety levels to a minimum and aids our staff’s mental health.

Karen Johnston Office Manager, Christian Fellowship Church

Andrea Ashman, Director of HR at MidKent College discusses the benefits of Benenden Healthcare for Business and how it has helped reduce sickness and absenteeism amongst her co-workers.

Frequently asked questions

We’ve collated some questions frequently asked by employers in the list below.

Are there any age restrictions for an employee to be accepted?

All employees who are normally resident in the UK and aged 16 and over are eligible, with no upper age limit.

Do employees need to undergo a medical to be accepted?

No lengthy medical questionnaires are necessary; medical history is disregarded.

How many people can I cover on business healthcare?

Healthcare for Business could be suitable for any company, any size.

Are there any hidden costs?

Our healthcare is available for one low, flat cost. There are no excesses. Also, our cost doesn’t increase due to employee age or service usage. The cost is reviewed on an annual basis.

Is it easy to set up?

Yes, we make it really easy, as everyone is accepted, as long as they are over 16 and normally resident in the UK. There are no medical questionnaires to answer and there is very little ongoing admin for you to do, as we assist the employee directly.

How do my employees access the medical helplines?

We’ll provide a free phone number to your employees, so that they can call from anywhere in the world whenever they need help. They will be asked to confirm their name and membership number, so that we can verify their details. For GP support the relevant medical specialist will call your employee back, at a convenient time to suit them. For psychological wellbeing support, assistance is provided on the initial call.

How does business healthcare differ to private medical insurance?

We’re not a medical insurer; all our services are provided on a discretionary basis. We review each case based on the wait on the NHS. For more information visit how it works.

How could my business save money through Healthcare for Business?

UK employees average 7.5 days absent each year (CIPD Absence Management Annual Survey Report 2016) equating to a cost of £938 per employee, based on the UK average salary of £29,009 p.a.*. And that’s without including the cost and resources needed to find replacement staff or the impact on customer dissatisfaction. Benenden Healthcare for Business could be a way of reducing the cost of absenteeism, through improved employee health and morale leading to reduced time off work. Don't just take our word for it.

*Calculation based on 2017 ONS, average salary of £29,009 with 252 working days (with 20 days holiday).

What is the cost?

Our Healthcare for Business is one low cost per employee, call our dedicated sales team to find out more.

What does ‘discretionary’ healthcare mean?

We’re not a medical insurer; all our services are provided on a discretionary basis.

This means when your employees call to request our services we review their case based on their current wait on the NHS.  If an NHS referral involves a wait time of more than three weeks for a diagnostic appointment or five weeks for an approved treatment, we will arrange a private appointment.

We review our services regularly and our members are informed of any changes.
