Five sugar-free breakfast recipes

If you’re looking to go sugar-free, and by that we mean cutting out the refined and processed variety, don’t dismay - there are plenty of recipes you can enjoy as part of your new food journey.

Breakfast is one of the most important meals of the day, if not THE most important; kick-starting your metabolism and providing energy for the day ahead. Lacking in inspiration for alternatives to sugar-based cereals or a breakfast bar on the go? Do not fear, we’ve pulled together five of the simplest and healthiest recipes to try.

Omelette with greens

Eggs are an ideal source of protein in a morning, especially if you enjoy a session in the gym before work. Again, this breakfast option can be prepped the night before with a little time and effort, ready for the next morning. The Sugar-Free Kitchen recipe called an “easy-peasy omelette” is a good one to try: using coconut oil, brown an onion in a pan, whisk eggs, water, and seasoning and add to the pan. Flip it so that it’s halved and cooked on both sides, and serve up with a helping of raw spinach, cherry tomatoes and steamed kale for additional greens.

Perfect pancakes

When you think of pancakes, you may be drawn to American or English style with oodles of sugar or maple syrup, but there are many sugar-free pancake recipes that will whet your appetite without being unhealthy. The simple to make cinnamon and coconut paleo pancakes from Nom Nom Paleo and clean-eating banana pancakes from Carly Neave are a great place to start. Rustle them up the night before, so they’re ready to go in the morning.

Yoghurt jars with sugar-free granola

Mason jars have become a popular kitchen item as they are an easy method for transporting food. Not only that, but it certainly makes your healthy dishes look aesthetically pleasing! If you feel the need for a little sweetness in the morning, but without the sugar, layer your mason jar with full-fat sugar-free yoghurt, fruit and homemade granola - just like Iowa Girl Eats - and you won’t be disappointed!

Blueberry and banana breakfast smoothie

Smoothies are perfect for those on the go, quick to make and enriched with goodness. All you’ll need for this yummy option from foodie guru, Deliciously Ella, is a combination of healthy ingredients, including banana, oats, blueberries and chia seeds. Whiz up the ingredients in a blender and voila! An on-the-move breakfast.

Bircher muesli

Bircher muesli is a big hit in health-conscious parts of the world, such as Australia and the West coast of America, but is increasing in popularity in the UK, too. A breakfast rich in fibre, low GI carbs, and omega 3, bircher muesli gives you slow-burning energy throughout the morning. The Healthy Chef’s mix of flaxseed, chia seeds, sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, goji berries, cranberries, almond milk, protein, a grated red apple and 2 tbsp of natural organic yoghurt, is an appetising sugar-free start to the day. Simply soak the seeds, berries and almond milk overnight, then add the rest of the ingredients in the morning.

Sugar-free breakfasts don’t have to be as dull and tasteless - these recipes prove that!
