Double Olympic champion Dame Kelly Holmes launches Benenden Hospital's new imaging service
11th December 2012
GPs, Consultants and health professionals were invited to an event at Benenden Hospital in Kent which saw Dame Kelly Holmes launch a new MRI service.
Dame Kelly became a Double Olympic Champion at the 2004 Athens Olympics in the 800m and 1500m and was honoured to be an official Team GB 2012 Ambassador this year.
The opening and launch celebration, on Monday, December 10, also included consultants and nurses from Benenden Hospital and senior members of staff from both the Hospital and Europe’s leading diagnostic imaging provider Alliance Medical, who provide the MRI service in liaison with the Hospital.
Dame Kelly cut a ribbon to launch the new service – and also cut a celebratory cake.
Also in attendance were two Olympic torch bearers from London 2012: Lana Foyle, 15, from Park Farm, Ashford and Tina Eke, the chair of Folkestone Running Club. As a thank you for supporting the event Benenden Hospital Trust and Alliance Medical gave their two charities - the Evelina Children’s Heart Organisation and the Kent Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance Trust - £100 each, with the cheques presented by Dame Kelly.
Both torch bearers were thrilled to get a look at Dame Kelly’s gold medals and to receive Dame Kelly’s autograph. Both said she had inspired them with their own running. Dame Kelly thanked them both for supporting this year’s Olympic Games.
Jeremy Harrington, Diagnostics and Therapeutics Manager at Benenden Hospital Trust said: “We were thrilled to welcome Dame Kelly to Benenden Hospital and were very pleased that she agreed to perform the official launch for us. We were also pleased the two London 2012 torchbearers came to our event to share stories about their experience.
“Our new service will mean we will be able to deliver an even more efficient service to our patients.”
David Loasby, Business Development Director at Alliance Medical said “We are delighted to be working together with Benenden Hospital to provide a high quality MRI service which delivers an even more efficient service to patients.”
Following the official opening there was an educational presentation by Benenden Hospital’s Medical Director and Consultant Radiologist Dr John Giles called MRI – Tips for effective use in primary care.
The MRI service at Benenden Hospital is now open daily. Also, it is no longer a mobile unit, but is permanently based at the Hospital site. The new service was made possible through a partnership between the Benenden Hospital Trust and Alliance Medical.
