Benenden health celebrates York Pride 2013
30th May 2013
Major York employer, Benenden Health – the leading mutual community that provides a range of discretionary healthcare services for a UK membership of over 900,000 - has become the leading sponsor of York Pride 2013, the annual event for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community in York and North Yorkshire.
This year, York Pride 2013 is challenging homophobia in sport, with the support and involvement of both York City FC and York City Knights – both of which are also backed by Benenden Health. This is believed to be the first time that a city’s major professional clubs have come together, across sporting divides, to combat prejudice against LGBT sports people and supporters.
Jean Scott, Member Services Director, said: “Benenden Health is pleased to have the opportunity to support York Pride 2013 and, as supporters of both York City Football Club and York City Knights, we’re delighted by this year’s theme of ‘Out in Sport’ and the aim to tackle homophobia in sport.”
“Benenden Health is not-for-profit, mutual organisation. Respecting others is one of our strongest values and solidarity is a key principle of mutuality. We value our people’s diversity, acknowledging that people differ – therefore we empathise completely with York Pride’s own aim to promote equality and diversity. We look forward to Saturday’s event and we’ll be there with our stall, so do come and say hello and find out more about us!”
The Saturday 1st June event will begin with a Pride Parade carrying a 100m long rainbow flag through the ancient streets of York and passing the Mansion House, where a rainbow flag will fly. The Parade will also include professional rugby league players, the mascots from York City FC and York City Knights and many of the City’s politicians to send out the message that York will not tolerate homophobia and prejudice in sport. York City Knight’s Head Coach, Gary Thornton, and Sophie Hicks, Director of York City FC, will speak at the start of the Parade outside York Minster, together with Leader of the City Council, Cllr James Alexander. Later in the day, York Central MP, Hugh Bayley and York Outer MP, Julian Sturdy, will address the crowd.
‘We are so pleased to receive the support of an organisation like Benenden Health, which is already linked with so many aspects of life in York and which has such a strong commitment to fairness’ said Dan Sidley, Chair of York Pride. ‘Whether you are gay or straight please come and join us for the York Pride Parade from the Minster on the 1st of June and send a message that York and North Yorkshire are tolerant places where people can enjoy their lives and participate fully – in sport and healthcare and other aspects of life – regardless of whether they are lesbian, bisexual, gay or transgender.’
