Happy 65th Birthday to the NHS!
5th July 2013
Today (July 5th 2013), it is 65 years since the NHS was first introduced and free healthcare became available for all. The NHS has played a vital role in caring for all aspects of the nation’s health over the years – providing a free health service which people can access at times of need.
From the very beginning, mutual healthcare provider benenden health - which was born out of the aspirations of ordinary people who grouped together in 1905 - has been a keen supporter of the NHS.
43 years before the NHS was created, benenden health was founded to provide a low-cost mutual model that would provide high quality, affordable healthcare and to this day, the organisation sees itself as complementary to the NHS.
Paul Keenan, Head of Communications at benenden health said: “The NHS is a highly respected British institution providing an incredible service to the public and we are delighted to join with others across the country in commemorating this special milestone in its history.
“benenden health has always been a supporter of the NHS and particularly the ethos which underpins it - to make healthcare services accessible to all. Our own services are designed to complement rather than replace those of the NHS.
“The 65th birthday of the NHS is a great milestone and we would like to wish it a very happy birthday!”
