New legislative initiative for mutuals welcomed by benenden health
22nd January 2014
Commissioner Tajani, the Vice-President for the European Commission, announced a new legislative initiative in favour of mutuals at the Social Entrepreneurs Conference of the European Commission held on 16th and 17th January.
Following this announcement, the Association Internationale de Mutualite (AIM) – which benenden health, a UK-based mutual is a member of – have responded as follows:
“AIM welcomes this positive step in favour of a European Mutual Statute in the European Union, which AIM and the mutual sector have been calling for repeatedly, for the health and the development of the mutual sector. Commissioner Michel Barnier as well as Benoît Hamon, the French minister for social economy warmly welcomed this new stage on the way to a European Mutual Statute.
“An important result of the conference, AIM members welcome particularly the final declaration on empowering social enterprises which sets conditions for social enterprises and establishes social economy as a model for the 21st century. The debates throughout the Conference highlighted the strength of social economy which stands out as a solid and sustainable alternative to the market economy.
“AIM members welcome the strong political message from the Commission and Parliament for the social economy sector at this conference and call for a swift proposal of a European Mutual Statute before the end of the term, to strengthen mutuals as social economy actors and allow them to develop”
Lawrence Christensen, Marketing Director at benenden health said in response to this announcement: “As a UK-based mutual and a member of AIM, benenden health is an active supporter of the introduction of a European Mutual Statute, which we believe will help secure the successful future of mutuals across Europe and allow for their development and expansion.
“We welcome this step and see it as a positive move forward for the future of a European Mutual Statute in the EU. The declaration on social enterprises particularly demonstrated the strength of such alternatives and how they can positively contribute to the economy. We are keen to see further such moves towards the introduction of the European Mutual Statute which we feel will strengthen the position of mutuals across Europe.”
